Locals in ‘overpoliced’ NYC areas instead want more programs, focus on crime’s root causes: study
BY THE NY DAILY NEWS: Despite more cops on the street, New Yorkers in some communities say they don’t feel any safer, and that city investment in housing, education and health care would do more to combat crime, according to a new report. City leaders need to attack the root causes of crime — poverty, inequity and inequality — instead of pouring more money into police and patrol cars, according to residents surveyed in “We Deserve To Be Safe,” a study examining the mood and outlook of people in “overpoliced” neighborhoods. … “This city has to get serious about true safety and stop messing around,” said Brooklyn Council member Alexa Aviles, who represents Red Hook and parts of Park Slope and Sunset Park. “We know true safety is an investment in the things that people need to thrive.” … READ MORE
ANALYSIS: Two out of three Chinatowns in New York are leaning Trump
BY WANNING SUN IN CRIKEY: … Chinatown in Manhattan is populated mainly by earlier-generation Chinese Americans, many of whom are Cantonese speakers living on welfare. While they are typically loyal Democrat voters, the other two Chinatowns in New York — Sunset Park in South Brooklyn and Flushing in Queens — are already turning red. Since the last election, the pendulum has been swinging back to Trump’s advantage, they told me. The 2024 survey also indicates that age is a key factor. Some 92% of young Chinese American voters in the 18- to 29-year-old category voted for Biden, while only 7% voted for Trump. At the same time, the survey indicates that while Biden voters came from all age groups, Trump voters tended to be more than 45 years old. … “We Chinese people don’t want to rely on welfare. We believe in making our own fortune with hard work. We have traditional family values like Trump.” … READ MORE

Survivor gets courage from St. Agatha’s intercession
BY TABLET: In the Diocese of Brooklyn, there is a retired religious sister who is a picture of good health — vibrant, active, and filled with joy. However, one might be surprised to learn that she fought off breast cancer — twice. The sister credits St. Agatha, the patron saint of breast cancer patients, not for curing her but instead for the saint’s intercession that helped her endure the disease and the harsh oncological treatments needed to keep it at bay. The sister asked to be anonymous to keep her medical condition private. Still, her story is an example of the power of intercession … her patronage for breast cancer patients is taken to heart at a local church named in her honor in Sunset Park. There, parishioners pray for the saint’s intercession at the end of the 8 a.m. Mass each Thursday in the chapel of St. Agatha’s Parish convent. “I encourage people to have a devotion to St. Agatha, especially women,” said Father Peter Bai, pastor at St. Agatha Parish. “And then,” he added, “I tell husbands to pray for their wives.” … READ MORE
From snakeroot to salamanders, life thrives in cemeteries
BY MENTAL FLOSS: … By the mid-19th century, at least six other U.S. cities had established a rural cemetery based on Mount Auburn’s philosophy and design. Among the knolls and groves lie 570,000 graves marked with statues, busts, monuments, and elaborate mausoleums in a mix of architectural styles, honoring a similar amalgam of deceased New Yorkers, from Samuel F.
