BY BROOKLYN REPORTER: A slice of Johnny’s Pizzeria lives on in Sunset Park. Generoso’s Bakery Café, which is well-known for its coffee, pastries and bread, has added new items to its menu, including pizza. The bakery installed pizza ovens and hired some of the chefs from Johnny’s, which closed in January after 56 years. … “Generoso’s Bakery is a Sunset Park institution and it’s one little corner of old-time Sunset Park that’s thriving,” said BID Executive Director David Estrada. “Everyone was especially happy to see the crew of pizza chefs from the much loved and recently closed Johnny’s Pizzeria behind the counter.” … READ MORE

NYC touts porous pavement installations to mitigate flooding
BY CBS NEW YORK: It might not look like much if you are driving by, but the city's Department of Environmental Protection says a narrow stretch of porous pavement on 37th Street and 12th Avenue in Borough Park, Brooklyn can make a big difference to prevent flooding. "A lot of our thinking has been about how do we divert rainwater away from sewers. And we've been working on this, in fact, for well over a decade," DEP Commissioner Rohit T. Aggarwala said. … The city plans to install pavement like this in other areas, including Borough Park, Sunset Park and Kensington. However, officials say it can't go everywhere because of things like varying soil conditions and major underground infrastructure. There are other limitations, too, DEP estimates the pavement will need to be cleaned twice a year to keep debris out of the pores and maintain its functionality. … READ MORE
Brooklyn woman advocates for new law to address loophole in unlicensed driver case
BY WPIX: A Brooklyn woman’s outcry about unregulated scooters has grabbed the attention of New York lawmakers. There is a new effort to close a legal loophole after an unlicensed driver allegedly struck and killed a man steps from his home. “My dad was buried here a month ago today,” Vivian Barreto told PIX11 News in tears. Barreto, 53, is on a personal crusade against scooter scofflaws. In Sunset Park, 60th Street and 5th Avenue is a moped hotspot. Residents said two-wheeled vehicles zip around the busy Brooklyn streets now more than ever. And one of them killed Barreto’s father. “I just want a law that changes so no one experiences the tragedy that I have,” she said. … READ MORE

BY BROOKLYN REPORTER: Bishop Robert Brennan came to Sunset Park to celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, the patroness of Haiti. “I share a strong devotion to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, who has been a great help and inspiration to me,” Brennan said. “I love Our Blessed Mother in the image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, similar to that of the faithful who attended the Mass, who holds Christ as Mary holds each of us, especially in our times of need.
