BY GOTHAMIST: … At a middle school in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, students are pocketing “red cards” outlining undocumented immigrants’ rights as fast as teachers can print them. On the Upper West Side, residents are signing up to escort undocumented kids to school so their parents don’t have to leave the house and risk being detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. ‘I GOT A STORY TO TELL’: Exhibit celebrates the art and narratives of Black women
BY BROOKLYN PAPER: A new art exhibition, “I GOT A STORY TO TELL,” celebrating Black womanhood and storytelling through the works of four talented Black female artists, has opened at Industry City in Sunset Park. Running from Feb. 1 to March 8, the exhibition honors Black History Month and marks the gallery debut of artists Blu Murphy, Brittney S. Price, Kaylyn Webster, and Lex Marie.Curated by Tatianna Mack, the art liaison for Tanya Weddemire Gallery, the exhibit is a personal project inspired by Mack’s conversations with her maternal grandmother, Etta Mack Johnson, and her reflections on identity, resilience and community. … READ MORE
Teenager arrested for alleged train hijacking
BY BK READER: Two teens were arrested and charged Monday night in connection with a hijacking of an empty R train last week, according to police. A 15-year-old from Brooklyn and a 17-year-old from the Bronx are charged with criminal mischief, reckless endangerment and possession of burglary tools. The group, which according to police included five individuals believed to be teens, are accused of hijacking the train Wednesday night and left at the 36th Street station in Sunset Park. BY THE NEW YORK TIMES: Community solar projects allow subscribers to benefit from the renewable energy source even without installing solar panels. … Across New York City, community solar projects can be found on rooftops at Brooklyn shopping centers, universities in the Bronx and public housing complexes in Queens. Projects in development include a parking lot canopy at Kennedy Airport, one atop the Bronx Terminal Market and another at the Brooklyn Army Terminal in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park section. The Sunset Park project takes the community solar concept further. Those who participate will share ownership of the 45,000-square-foot installation with the developer. “Revenue from the project will be reinvested into a community wealth fund,” said Elizabeth Yeampierre, the executive director of UPROSE, the nonprofit group that organized the joint venture. … READ MORE
Industry City welcomes the Year of the Snake with lion dancing, art installation
BY BROOKLYN PAPER: Industry City welcomed the Year of the Snake with a colorful Lunar New Year celebration. Dozens of Brooklynites rang in the new year in Sunset Park alongside a troupe of lion dancers and musicians who roamed through the campus. Lion dances, often performed on Lunar New Year, are thought to bring good luck and good fortune — and Industry City’s lion blessed businesses and visitors alike as it wound through businesses and courtyards. … SEE PHOTOS
